Sea Freight
Container Ships are the lifeblood of international trade in our globalized world. More than half of the busiest cargo ports are located in China, including 4 out of the top 5 around the globe. Shipping goods by Sea Freight is generally the most inexpensive choice, as well as the option with the smallest Carbon footprint.
A shipment from China to Switzerland by Sea takes roughly 25 to 45 days, depending on the departure port and route. Compared to the alternatives, container ships are the slowest means of transport and they are relatively complex to organize.
If you have a solid forecast of demand and you are not in a hurry, Sea Freight is probably your way to go!
Train Freight
Transportation on Rails has been the up-and-coming shipping method of the last 10 years. While cargo trains have been used inside Europe for decades, intercontinental trade has rarely been done via freight trains. Thanks to the push in infrastructure in the last years, shipments via trains are now a viable alternative for Swiss companies to transport their goods from China.
Generally, Train freight sits between Sea Freight and Air Freight regarding duration and cost. A Train shipment from Mainland China takes roughly 15 to 20 Days and the costs are usually approximately 30-60% higher than Sea Freight.
Air Freight
Air Freight is by far the fastest and most expensive option when shipping goods from China to Switzerland. Services like Fedex, DHL or UPS offer convenient courier services, but it is also possible to circumvent these extra costs and organize the shipment through other agents.
Generally, air freight deliveries take between 5 to 15 Days, but they also emit 47 times more emissions per unit than a Container Ship. Furthermore, shipments by plane are roughly 4-6x more costly than freight trains
